yes, he's awake here, but was asleep 10 minutes later.

at the bobbi brown counter at macy's.  seriously.

arlo never naps at home.  seriously.  NEVER.  if i am having a remarkably lucky day, one of the following may happen: 1) i can get him to fall asleep, gently put him in his crib, where he will nestle down, to sleep for a whopping 20 minutes, OR, 2) i can get him to fall asleep nursing, rest his head on my shoulder, and unfold myself into a reclining position on the sofa, where he will sleep on me for maybe an hour.  but by sleeping on me, he's basically literally enforcing the "sleep when the baby sleeps" rule, which is a rule that i hate because: my baby never sleeps during the day (see above), and when he does, he's sleeping on me (see above) and i usually have something i really need to be doing rather than posing as arlo's chaise lounge.

HOWEVER, put him in a car seat, stroller, baby carrier and off he goes.  arlo has slept through entire farmer's market trips, target adventures, restaurant trips (by the way, thank you so much, arles!),  museums, and a couple of road trips.  we are beginning to joke that most times he falls asleep, he wakes up somewhere completely different.  he has mastered this quiet little look around, where he kind of takes in what he can sense before he really commits to waking up, like...

"bright lights, babies crying, cart noises?  i think we're at target again.  go back to sleep."

"humming, vibrations, and things passing outside?  the car.  go back to sleep."

"bumpy walking, talking and smells like food?  farmer's market.  go back to sleep, but not for too long.  there are swings here."

Do you have a swing at home? Spence napped exclusively in his swing until he got too heavy and it wouldn't swing anymore (which was, you know, 4.5 months or something for him). I was terrified that when the swing stopped working he would never take another nap, but by then he had a good sleeping rhythm and transitioned with no trouble.
